Sr. Database Administrator (25857)

Job Purpose:

Provides ongoing maintenance and proactive performance monitoring, and supporting users. Provides highest level of hands on database support for application support and development teams, including work with T-SQL, PL-SQL, I-SQL, Stored Procedures, SSIS packages, etc.


Provides high level of support and assists team in troubleshooting and tuning production database and integration issues. Will react quickly to restore functionality during system failure situations.


Responsible for managing the completion of estimating, programming, documenting, debugging and testing databases within the Greyhound environment. Interacts with IT staff and business users as appropriate. Works with architecture and development leads to establish best practice support, development and architecture standards.


This position will continually research new methodologies and combine them with industry standard best-practices to stay abreast of valuable information and skills to benefit Greyhound’s websites. This position will also foster knowledge sharing with team members to strengthen the team in building a set of core competencies to support the business and its underlying database technologies.



Key Duties:

  • Partners with Application Support teams to develop, introduce and support database technology solutions. Maintaining an effective working relationship with these teams is key.
  • Provides expertise and guidance in performance tuning and stabilization of MS SQL, Oracle and/or Sybase database platforms, preferably with a cloud service provider.
  • Provides support on overall database strategy to include forecasting and road maps to achieve key objectives for performance of upcoming feature enhancements.
  • Prioritizes, tracks, and analyzes team’s performance data for the purposes of improving operations, forecasting staffing needs and effectively utilizing all available resources.
  • Defines database requirements by interviewing business partners, analyzing applications, programming, and operations.
  • Designs and implements monitoring for all database systems; includes leveraging third party tools for system KPI’s and proactively identifying performance issues with appropriate solutions.
  • Installs enhancements or new systems by proposing specifications and flowcharts; recommending optimum access techniques; coordinating installation requirements.
  • Ensures all productions changes are made in accordance with lifecycle methodology and risk guidelines and are fully tested and documented within our ticketing system.
  • Maintains the highest caliber of service by establishing and enforcing organization standards.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks.




  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in MIS, Computer Science or equivalent work experience required.
  • Relevant technology certification is encouraged. 

Core Capabilities:

  • 10 years’ experience working in Database Operations and Support groups
  • 8 years’ experience with hands on SQL Server, Oracle and/or Sybase administration, installation, upgrades and configuration in HA/DR environments
  • Experience with Azure cloud or other cloud services provider
  • Strong TSQL, PLSQL, and/or I-SQL and SSIS skills with hands on experience
  • Deep insight with SQL, Oracle and/or Sybase database performance tuning
  • Experience in running and maintaining a 24 X 7 production database ecosystem


SQL, Oracle Sybase Server:

  • Manage the installation and HA configuration of various versions of MS SQL Server, Oracle (RAC, R-Man), Sybase
  • Must have experience with Azure SQL IaaS, PaaS, Oracle Cloud, AWS or other Cloud Services
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Windows Server, Linux, and/or AIX


Additional Skills:

  • SSIS package troubleshooting. ​

  • Experience with various Database Tools – Microsoft Visual Studio, DB Visualizer, Visio, SQL Toolbelt, ER Studio, DBArtisan, SQL Diagnostics Manager, SQL Safe, SQL Compliance Manager, SQL Secure, and SQL Defrag Manager, Toad, Data Point, Spotlight, Foglight, SQL Developer.
