Network Engineer (34391)

Job Purpose: Configures and implements FirstGroup data and voice infrastructure and serves as the networking subject matter expert.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Engineers, configures, and leads the design, configuration and deployment of voice and data networks including  LAN, MAN, WAN and VOIP, circuits, routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, VPN, proxy, CSU/DSU and other network infrastructure devices.  
  • Serves as tier 2 and/or tier 3 escalation point for work orders and trouble tickets for cable and infrastructure installation, monitoring, testing, servicing and administration.  
  • Defines network monitoring requirements to ensure adequate data and tools to monitor network utilization, service level agreement, measurements and outage/impairment reporting.
  • Based on monitoring data, recommends reconfiguration as appropriate in collaboration with Architecture, Systems Engineering, Network Administration, and Systems Administration teams.  Generates and maintains network support documentation.
  • Identifies capacity planning needs and issues that may affect system performance and availability.
  • Generates and maintains user support documentation.
  • Serves as backup resource for network administration tasks as required. Includes liaison with outsourced network support teams for consultation & extended troubleshooting purposes.
  • Defines periodic health check criteria and frequencies for execution by network and systems administrators.
  • Defines performance and security of network infrastructure in collaboration with Architecture and Systems Engineering teams. 
  • Reviews network utilization statistics to verify that circuits are properly sized.   

Experience & Skills Required:          

  • 3-5 years of experience in network administration. 
  • Extensive knowledge of network theory and application in a distributed environment. 
  • Extensive knowledge of TCP/IP, Ethernet, LAN and WAN topologies, WiFi, WAP, firewalls, routers, switches, hubs, VPN, IPSec, DHCP, DNS, WINS, SNMP, network monitors and protocol analyzers. Windows Envinroments. Cisco IOS, PIX, ASA.
  • Experience with VOIP environments.
  • Thorough knowledge of CSU/DSUs, Cisco routers, Bay/Networks hubs and switches, frame relay, ISDN:, ATM, DSL/ADSL, Fiber, MPLS, QOS. CCNA, CCNP,CCIE or equivalent.
  • Strong analytical and diagnostic skills
  • Communicates effectively (written and orally) with users, staff and management. 
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related area, or equivalent job experience.
  • CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, CompTIA or equivalent network certification.
